Global Observatory of Lake Responses to Environmental Change

September 2015 - Tales of optics, radiometry and copious amounts of potato salad during the INCIS-3IVE Lake Vänern campaign!

Vagelis, Claire and Peter spent an enjoyable week with Victor Vicente and Stefan Simis from PML and colleagues from the GLaSS on Lake Vänern as part of the INCIS-3IVE project validating Landsat-8, exploring variability in the lake's bio-geo-optical properties and doing an inter-comparison of our radiometers. Great fun was had by all, especially the floating sauna - but I'm pretty sure we won't be rushing to eat more potato salad for a while!

Photos from the campaign will be uploaded to our Gallery over the next few days...

August 2015 - LOCHS team return from Danube Delta & Black Sea cruise

Andrew, Peter, Vagelis & Adriana have completed an 7-day research bio-geo-optics cruise in the Danube Delta and Black Sea coast in collaboration with colleagues from GeoEcoMar onboard the R/Vs Istros & Curina and the tender Murica. During the cruise we measured variability in the bio-geo-optical properties of the Danube River and the various lakes and lagoons along it course until it meets the Black Sea. Adriana also collected sediment cores from various channels and lakes to look at long-term channels in sedimentation within the system. The team will be returning again next year to undertake further measurements in the Delta and for a 8-day EUROFLEETS cruise on the Black Sea aboard the R/V Mare Nigrum. Photos from the campaign can be viewed in our Gallery.

July 2015 - Lake Geneva campaign a success!

Peter and Vagelis have returned from Lake Geneva having successfully completed a two-week sampling campaign at Lake Geneva, Switzerland for the European Facility for Airborne Research (EUFAR) HILLBilly project. The project involved the acquisition of hyperspectral APEX imagery of Lake Geneva and Lake Biel from DLR's Dornier aircraft and the collection of in situ optical and biogeochemical data to support the development and validation of algorithms for optically complex waters. In addition, the project also included a sampling cruise for the validation of Landsat 8 OLI data and the novel use of ships-of-opportunity for the validation of airborne data. Photos from the campaign can be viewed in our Gallery.
